Wish I could come tonight at 9pm at the Cafe Express Post

meet another client.
Will have my laptop with me and will be on the Internet
working on the web site,(adding pictures etc., which I have
already scanned)and checking in via Email. Will see you

New Tango Practice Location
The Houston Argentine Tango Association will be trying out a
new Tuesday night practice location for the next two weeks,
beginning with our Tuesday, September 30, practica (tonight!).
The new location is the River Oaks Community Center, under the
management of the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, at 3600
Locke Lane, near Westheimer and Edloe. There are various pros
and cons with this new space, and we want to know your opinions
about making it our permanent home. (There are no changes in
the Sunday night practice at Cafe Express.)
Here is my attempt at a map to the new facility. The building
backs up to Westheimer, behind a fence. If you need more help
with directions, call the center at 713-622-5998.

WARNING: Parking is not allowed on the north side of Locke Lane
in front of the community center (the side with private homes).
Locke Lane is a narrow street. I am told that the residents
of Locke Lane will have your car towed if you park on the north
side of the street, in front of their houses. There is plenty of
parking on the south side of Locke Lane and on adjacent streets.
Please observe the "no parking" signs.

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:
Dear Tangueros:
I agree that we need many more pictures up on the web site,
especially of our beautiful ladies. We do have a professional
photographer who is going to be coming to our meetings soon
who is a friend of mine and he has volunteered to take some
pictures for us, so we will have more photos for the web
pages. I have mentioned it to Lester and he says that it
is OK with him.
Also if any of your have some great photos that you would
like to send to me by Email, I will do my best to put them
up on the web pages. If you do send me some photos, please
scan them as either JPEG or GIF files, and keep them down to
a resolution near 72dpi (Anything more is lost on the
Internet anyway, and just makes the file larger and more
difficult to send) 100dpi is OK. Also, try to keep the file
size down to between 30k to 50k. You can send pictures (only
two per Email) to:
rri@neosoft.com
Also, if you have any very very short pieces of tango music
like around 3 seconds and you can put them in a wave file,
*.wav format, you can also send those in to be used for the
music on the front web page. We are looking for a really
great definitive piece of dramatic tango music that can be
repeated endlessly in the background. The sound file
should be under 80K in size total.
You can send files to me by using the "attachment" feature
in your Email in either Netscape or Microsoft Explorer. Send
them to
rri@neosoft.com
Also, if you have anything in text, let me know. You can
Email me this too.
Please remember that Lester is the big boss, so he will have
to approve what goes up on the web page. I am just a worker
and a dancer...lol.
Looking forward to seeing everyone this Tuesday.

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:
Dear Houston Tangueros/as,
I am very pleased to announce a special tango musical event
for next Sunday, January 25th at Cafe Express on Post Oak.
Jan LaRocque, one of our tango dancers, is a member of a quintet
with a new interest in tango music, and this quintet has been
practicing a number of tango arrangements. This group is composed
of two violins, a viola, a chello, and an accordion. They will
play live Argentine tango dance music for our next Sunday practice.
All members of this quintet are working musicians and we are very
lucky that they have taken a personal interest in tango music,
donating their time for this one performance. Please note that
they will be playing from 8pm until 10pm only, so I urge you
arrive earlier than normal to enjoy all of their great music.
We will be playing our normal recorded music during their breaks
and after they are through.
Best regards,
Lester

Dear Houston World Tango:
Congrats... very useful website!.
Maybe someone in this chatroom (or website) has some
info that would not mind to share. I live in New Jersey
and tango in New York City regularly. But during april
and may/98, I will be in New Orleans, LA.
My issue is that I am tired of
looking for a milonga, "practica", or even "classes"
for argentine tango in New Orleans; so far, I have
found none of the above. If anybody in
Houston knows any place in New Orleans that I could
regularly attend, I'd appreciate such info immensely.
Otherwise, I am willing to ocassionally drive to Houston
in search of a place for those of us with the argentine
tango "fever"... By the way, what places (and days) in
the city of Houston are available to argentine-tango
dance ?
thanks,

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:
Dear Houston Tangueros and Tangueras,
I am pleased to announce a special event for next Sunday's tango
practice at Cafe Express. Our very own Julie Taylor, professor
of anthropology at Rice University, has just published her latest
book, and it is all about Argentine tango. While I have yet to
receive my own copy, "Paper Tangos" looks to be a terrific study
of the culture surrounding the Argentine tango. I have thirty
copies of the book on order, and Julie will be available from
9-10pm next Sunday, June 7, at Cafe Express, to sign your copy.
The publisher has given me a 25% discount on this order, and
we will be passing the savings along to you. Julie leaves for
the summer in Buenos Aires on June 13, so the plan is to get a
number of copies into people's hands so that when she is back
in the fall, she can do a reading or lecture and we can have a
lively discussion based on having read her book.
As an added bonus, the book has a delightful set of tiny tango
pictures printed on each page, so when the book is thumbed,
we see a short tango movie!!
Tonight, Tuesday, June 2, will be another practice-only night,
starting at 8pm, at Stevens of Hollywood. You can park in the
corner lot anytime after 8pm. Tango classes will begin again
next Tuesday evening, June 9, at 7:30pm.
Discover Dance continues to host their Saturday night practices,
8:30pm till midnight, $5/cover, lots of tango music, on an
excellent two level dance floor. 14520 Memorial, Suite 59,
call 281-558-0369 for more details.
Best regards,
Lester

>From Kirkus Reviews , 05/11/98:
paper 0-8223-2191-2 This very personal, idiosyncratic volume
is not a celebration of the tango - so common these days -
but a meditation on it as an expression of Argentine identity
and history. Taylor is a ballet-dancer-turned-anthropologist
whose initial encounter with Argentina was a cultural study of
ritual dance; she ended up in Buenos Aires learning to dance the
tango. Here she broaches several themes of Argentine identity that
she finds encapsulated in the tango but that have resonance beyond
the countryþs boundaries. The tango as Taylor presents it
is the
embodiment of contradiction: the blank face and still upper body
opposing the rapid movement of legs; the macho pose of the male
versus his inner feeling of sadness and loss (a paradox of male
identity that Taylor situates in the barrios of Buenos Aires where
the tango was born); the apparent romance between the couple and
their actual solitude within the dance. On a more personal level,
the author conveys the passion with which devotees approach
the tango, attending daily late-night dance sessions where they
argue over style with as much ardor as they dance. But tango,
according to Taylor, is also an expression of violence, defined
in a range of ways: as dominance (of male over female), as terror
(of the military junta over the Argentine people), as sexual abuse
(of the author herself when she was a girl). Similarly, ambiguities
in Taylor's own sense of identity are mirrored in a corresponding
ambiguity that she finds in Argentina: "the particular forms
of disorientation, loss, and uncertainty of the nation's fate
inculcated by years of terror." An original and profound study
of the power of a dance to express the heart of a culture. --

Here is a late draft of the book jacket text:
Tango. A multi-dimensional expression of Argentine identity.
Beautiful and inviting, yet sometimes laden with power relations,
the tango has a mesmerizing attraction for dancers and audiences
alike throughout the world. It also speaks to a nation's sense of
disorientation, loss and terror. In Paper Tangos, Julie Taylor --
a classically trained dancer and anthropologist -- examines the
poetics of the tango while describing her own quest to dance this
most dramatic of paired dances.
Californian by birth, Taylor has lived much of her adult life
in Latin America and has spent years studying the tango in
Buenos Aires, dancing during and after the terror of military
dictatorships. This book is at once an account of a life
lived crossing the borders of these two complex cultures and an
exploration of the conflicting meanings of tango for women who love
the poetry of its movement yet can feel uneasy with the roles it
bestows on the male and female dancers. Drawing parallels between
the violences of the Argentine Junta, the play with power inherent
in tango dancing, and her own experiences with violence inside
and outside the intriguing tango culture, Taylor weaves the line
between engaging memoir and insightful cultural critique of both
her home and host cultures. While situating the tango within the
contexts of its creative birth and contemporary presentations,
this book welcomes us directly into tango subculture and reveals
the ways that personal, political, and historical violences
operate in our lives.
Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:
Another cycle of tango classes begin tonight, Tuesday, June 9, at
Stevens of Hollywood dance studio, 2143 Westheimer at Greenbriar,
at 7:30pm. Both tango newcomers and continuing students are
welcome to attend. For those of you with no tango experience, our
team of instructors will work with you the first night and beyond
to ease your transition into out continuing class. If newcomers
will plan to stay for the practice following the first night's
class, our instructors will offer lots of extra attention.
The five week class costs $25, collected on the first night.
Please arrive a little early the first night so we can get the
paperwork out of the way for a 7:30pm start. For the first night
of class only (Tuesday, June 9), the following practice is no
charge so we can help newcomers work on basic skills after class.
On all other nights, the practice is charged separately, $3 for
students in our tango class or other full time students, and $5
for non-students.
Be sure not to park in the paved lot at the corner of Westheimer
and Greenbriar before 8pm. Tango practice will begin at 8:30pm
for the next five weeks, as usual.
See you there!
Best regards,
Lester

Dear Jay:
Thank you for joining our chat. Glad to here from you in
Switzerland. I went to high school in Rolle, near Geneva
and Gstaad. Was wonderful.
I think, as in all things, it is primarily the "mind" which
makes all the difference. There is a big variation between
ballet and "bump and grind" dancing and yet it is the same
thing....moving through space with ones body. I would think
the same would hold true for Tango and erotic dancing as well.
It is how you do it that counts. For me subtlty is the
difference.

Dear Derik,
Thanks a lot for you prompt answer. This discussion group really
deserves to be called "in progress"! Never met such a useful Tangosite
before.
Yesterday I tried to order the book "Paper Tangos" (Julie Taylor)
in a bookshop here in Switzerland. They said they were able to order it,
but it seemed to be very complicated and expensive. (Not the book, the
whole ordering-procedure)
My question: Can you think of a better way to get a copy in Switzerland?
Are there possibilities to order it directly from you? After having read
your article about it, I would love to have a copy.
Thanks for your help, I'm looking forward to read your answer.

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:
Hi, I'm from the Netherlands. Every now and then I check out this page to see what people have written and look at the pictures. Keep dancing!!! Kim
Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:
Dear Kim:
Good morning from Texas. Ran into a woman from our Tango
group at a sidewalk cafe here. She had not been to Tango
for a few months because she is in a swing dance contest.
We could not resist. We started dancing Tango in the cafe
immediately between the tables...lol. Life is wonderful.
We keep dancing here in Houston, Texas. Please come to
visit someday soon, and please tell us where we can Tango
in the Nederlands...

Dear Francisco:
Good morning. Believe it or not, my mother was born in
Shanghai of Swedish-Finnish-Russian parents, and lived there
as a child. My Dad and I are native Texans, and I grew up
going to high school in Switzerland. The world is a rather
small community...lol.

PS - I have a good friend, Anthony Gao, who lives in
Shanghai. You may have met him. He is an industrialist
there and his Chinese family goes back many generations in
Shanghai. He has a cellular phone too...lol. He calls me
while driving down the Bund in his chauffer driven
limosine. If I hear from him, I will tell him about your
group. Hopefully you can come to Houston one day soon.

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:
Dear Nina:
Received your E-Mail, but you did not leave a return E-Mail

I can find out.

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:
I was really interested to browse through your site. A decision was
easily made to tango Houston next Spring.
Tango in the UK is not widespread so travel is necessary and a lot
of fun. Did any one from your area go to DT`s event in Montreal in July?
We do however have a series of tea dances at the Waldorf ( London)
to celebrate their 90th. V delightful.
Regards Eric
EStango@aol.com
Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:
Hi Derek,
Thanks for your reaction. In the Netherlands Tango is getting more
and more popular. In Amsterdam (where I live) you can go out to dance tango
every day. That's because there are 4 tangoschools in town, and all of
them organise dance evenings. The salons (as we call the milonga's) and
the practise-evenings are always crowded. This week I went out to dance
three times, and next week I will dance three times too, for I am going
to follow a workshop from a dancecouple that's visiting from Buenos Aires.
Maybe this is interesting for some World Tangoreaders: Between Christmas
and new year there is a tangofestival in Amsterdam. I don't have a lot
of information about it right now, but I heard it's supposed to attract
people from all over the world. It might be an option for Eric from the
UK: it's pretty close.
How's tangolife around there? Bye,
Kim
Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:
give me some history on the Tango for a spanish project
Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:
Dear Kim:
Wonderful to hear from you in Amsterdam. I definitely want
to come to your city to Tango, so please save a dance for
me. Will be there as soon as I can. Now working on going
to Buenos Aires also...lol.
We are also going to Tango about almost every day now. It
is so wonderful. Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and
Saturday. Also, this coming week our entire Houston group
is going to Austin, Texas to attend the theater and a
Milonga for the cast of "Forever Tango", the hit broadway
play from New York. We will be joining with the Austin,
Texas group, and a Tango Orchestra cslled TOSCA which will
play "live" tango music for us at the milonga. It should be
great fun. I will definitely give you a report next week
with pictures after my postings right here.
If anyone wants to attend the milonga in Austin, just let
me know. Everyone is welcome. It is Saturday evening.
I have all the details. Send me E-Mail at:
rri@neosoft.com
Would love to come to Amsterdam for the Tango Festival. I
will try my best. Please keep me up to date on the latest.
I will be right here.

PS - Kim, if you have any pictures of your group in
Amsterdam that are already on a webpage somewhere, you can
post them here by just entering the web page address in the
"Full URL of Your Picture" box below your message. It would
look like this:

Might be fun to see what all our different groups are doing
in photographs. I put my picture at the beach in Mexico
below, but the picture can be anything you want to put
there.

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:
Dear Eric:
Please do come down to Houston this Spring to Tango. We
will all be here. We could use some English influence...lol.
Maybe in the meantime, you can take one of those gambling
boats from England over to Holland and try Tango in
Amsterdam. That is what I would do right away, especially
with the beautiful Kim as my guide..lol.
We will be here in Houston when you come to visit, and if
we hear of any Tango groups in the UK we will tell you all
we know.

I hope that you are still reading our posts here on this
webpage. I have met and danced with two wonderful sisters
from Norway, Urd and Idun, who tangoed for the first
time last Wedensday at the Orchid Lounge here in Houston
to the "live music" tango orchestra. They, like me, are
now addicted to Tango....lol.
One sister, the beautiful Idun, will be coming back to
Norway soon from her travels here in Houston, Texas and she
wants to be the Tango Queen of Norway. Her sister, Urd is
at NASA here and has the computer. Do you think that you
might give us some details of where Idun might be able to
Tango in Norway? She is a wonderful dancer and very
beautiful as well. I am sure that you will be happy to see
her.
If you or anyone who knows Tango in Norway can help us, we
would appreciate the infromation. Idun will be here for
only another week or so. Fortunately for all of us here in
Houston ,Urd lives here. Both of them will be reading these
pages, so you should be able to say hello to them directly.
Thank you.

Hi Derick!
Chatting with a friend in a cafe here in Amsterdam, I was surprised
to hear a great tango music. Unfortunately, there was no tanguera in sight,
so I had to calmly continue to sip my coffee instead of going wild on the
dance floor.
Surely this would never have happened in Houston.
On the other hand, no coffee would have freely decided to play that
wonderful music....
See you soon

January 10th here in Houston at City Streets nightclub
5pm-12pm AND THERE WILL BE "LIVE" TANGO MUSIC AND DANCE!!!!!
PROVIDED BY THE GYPSIES (with an Eastern European flair, of
course...lol.). Camelia and I will be dancing tango and she
has also helped Greg write some new Romanian songs for the
folk daancers and orchestra, so we will all be having a wild
time. We expect about 2,000 people for the annual event and
will fill the nightclub. Also there will be plenty of fresh

I think it is his family business. He used to work here at

here in Houston. Lots of fun people and many beautiful
women..
Please say hello for me if you see him. He is a great guy

Dear Georges:
Welcome back to Houston. Glad that you are here in time
for the Russian New Year's party this Sunday. We had a
great time last night at the resturant Ciao Luna and we
all danced outside and inside until midnight. We are now
going to dance Tango there every Friday night. You missed
a great party.
Camelia and I danced, Greg Harbar (the Russian New Year
organizer) came by, and an Englishman, Michael, who travels
with Princess Ann of England (he has a great story about
being on a bus in New Orleans with her entourage traveling
in the US and being stuck on a bridge over the Mississippi
River with a Zydeco music dance band and all their
instruments. He said that they all have to dance off the
bridge to Zydeco music....lol.) Also he brought with
him a beautiful Russian girl, Annya, who is from Siberia.
Naturally, we had fun and THEY WILL ALL BE AT RUSSIAN NEW
YEAR THIS SUNDAY, so you will see them then. See you there.

I had a wonderfull time at the Milongo in Auston Last weekend.
I would say this was the best Tango event I have ever been to.
It was so nice meeting you Derik and all the other Houston Tango

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:
Does anyone know of good web sites with authentic tango pictures?
Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:
I want to learn how to Tango! I grew up on ballroom and last year took two-step and polka at SSQQ. But I'm dying to learn Latin dance. Where is the best place to learn and practice? Cafe Express? I don't have a partner. But I've danced socially all my life so I don't think I'll trip all over anyone's shoes. Thanks for the info. Heather Dodge E-mail is hdodge@rice.edu
Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:
Dear Heather:
Great to see you here on World Tango. Yes, we are all at Cafe Express
every Sunday
night from 8:30-11:30pm and now also pratice at the Downtown YMCA
Health Club from
7:30-10:00pm every Tuesday. Look forward to seeing you tomorrow
night, Tuesday.
Actually you will probably learn Tango much faster if you come on
your own, because
you can dance with everyone without worrying about the person you
brought with you.
Also we all dance with everyone because each person can teach you
something a little
different. If you dance with the same person all the time, you will
both just
develop bad habits together...lol. Variety is the spice of life,
and in Tango
variety teaches you how to deal with all kinds of dance partners,
good and bad.
The sign of a good Tango dancer is someone who can adapt. People
that follow
rigid rules are the worst dancers. Afterall Tango is supposed to
be fun and if
it isn't, then why do it? Anyway, that is my opinion. See you there.
Derik
rri@neosoft.com

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:
Hi Derek,
it has been a while since I visited this site, so I didn't get the
chance to meet Georges in Amsterdam. From the postings I understand that
he is back in Houston. I think I know in which cafe he was hearing the
tangomusic. It's a shame, we could have danced.....
Anyway, I have not been dancing much, because I have been in a little
tangocrisis lately. Around Xmas I did a womenworkshop in which much attention
was paid at being more of a personality in following, instead of just being
some kind of doll the leader can do with whatever he likes. Since then
every time I go to a Milonga I get into arguments with the guys I dance
with, because they say I'm not letting myself be led by them......... What
is wrong with these guys? Or is something wrong with me???? My own teachers
say there's nothing wrong with me exept that I seem to attract assholes
on the dancefloor.... but I don't dance much anymore because of it. The
fun is out of the dancing for me right now. I am mixed up if I'm dancing
good or bad. I only dance with my own dance partner now.
Anyway, hope you all are okay, and lady's... any kind of advice
is more than welcome!
Kim

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:
Dear Kim:
Great to hear from you again. I was just listneing to Radio Netherlands
last night
to hear the lastest news from Europe. A tango crisis...lol...boy,
do I understand
that. Me too... I have many of them all the time with my various
partners...lol.
I think it is part of Tango.
Guess what, Georges is now in Buenos Aires doing Tango for 2 months
and he will be
returning to Brussels permanently to work at Solvay Chemicals headquarters.
He
should be back in Europe by the end of April, so I bet you will
see him soon again
in Amsterdam. Perhaps he will be at the same coffee shop..lol. I
will see if I can
send him an Email for you, and get you a good Email address for
him.
I have the same problems as you with my Tango partners and I solved
it mostly by just
dancing with the women who follow well or even dancing with women
who are new
arrivals and who do not know enough steps yet to be able to lead...lol.
For me,
women who lead and men who are weak leaders are always a problem
in Tango.
I think Ernesto Camerona, from Buenos Aires, at a Tango workshop
here in Houston
this last year said it best. He says that women should be able to
dance Tango the
first time and should dance with there eyes closed and just enjoy
it. He says that
women do not have to know Tango at all, but the men do.
Ernesto says that unfortunately it is the men who have to know the
steps and watch
where the couple is going. He says if the man is not a good leader
then a good
woman tango dancer has to adapt to follow him in all of his mistakes
and try to make
him look good. He says that this is her only choice and that she
cannot force him
to be better...lol. He also says that it is possible for the woman
to lead the dance,
but that has to be agreed upon first and she will then basically
take on the man's
role, but that this may not be what she wants to do...lol. Ernesto
says that Tango
dancing is similar to driving a car. Only one person at a time is
allowed to drive.
He says that two drivers fighting over the steering wheel will just
cause a wreck..lol.
I myself have noticed that the women who I have the most problems
with leading are
usually trained in classical ballet. I have done a lot of dance
fims and know a lot
of ballet dancers. I have found that while they always look fantastic
when they
dance tango, they are also used to doing their own individual steps
or routines and
this habit causes them problems when they have to give up contol
of the dance to a
partner who is not a strong lead. A ballet dancer needs a very stong
lead to give
her a framework in which to dance, because she will take off on
her own very quickly.
It usually takes me a while to gain some kind of balance and get
them to calm down
...lol.
Also Ernesto said something quite interesting. He said that the women
actually have
to dance Tango twice as fast as the men. He says that the men have
all the freedom
to define the basic boring steps, but within those basic steps,
it is the women who
have the complete artistic freedom to do their "thing", which is
all the "flourishes",
the "accents" and "attention-getting" high kicks etc. which make
the tango so
beautiful. The men are supposed to be steady as a rock and the women
are supposed
to be the "stars" of the show.
Ernesto says that the women should not fight with the men for control
of the basic
steps, but instead should concentrate their energies on developing
the routines
within the basic steps so when the man stops the dance for a moment
she can shine.
A good example of this is the "parada", where the man stops completely
and the woman
can do whatever she likes. Here she is in complete control and he
is waiting for her
to do her thing.
Anyway, Kim, here is what I would do. First, stay away from assholes...lol.
Next,
just relax and let the man lead you and do your thing in between
his steps. If he
does not stop, make him stop for you by taking your time.
I think the trick to Tango is to know when to relax and when to "go
for it"...lol.
Neither you nor he can be in control all of the time, so let him
be in control for
awhile and then you take control when he stops. It is the give and
take. the
communications between a man and a woman that is the language of
this dance, so talk
to him and also listen to him. For me, each person has a little
bit different style
and that is the fun of it. Learning from your partner is wonderful.
Even if they
are bad today, they may become great tomorrow. You never know...lol.
The most
important thing is just to have fun. If I am not having fun, I just
dance with
someone else. My favorite women are the ones who sing to themselves
while dancing.
Also, I like the men who make noises by stamping their feet etc.
I know that these
people are enjoying themselves and having fun..lol. Look for people
who are fun.
If they are not fun to be with, next..lol.

Finally I am posting the picture of our group on Lake Austin during

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:
Dear Joe:
I just realized that you are in the above picture in the shadows
between Dana and
Gasan. It took me awhile to figure out that it was you until I could
make the
picture clearer. The guy that we asked to take the picture for us
was not the
world's greatest photographer. He did not check to see if all the
faces were in the
sunlight. I tired my best to fix the photo, but there was only so
much that I
could do. Next time, we will have to get a better photographer...lol.

Dear Ana:
Wow! Now Judith sends me an E-Mail and tells me that it is you in
the above picture
and not Kimber. Sorry about that. I changed the credits on the webpage
and got it
right hopefully. Now all we need to know is who is the guy on my
left? I remember
that he is a Romanian friend Dana's, that lives in Austin and joined
us after Tango,
but that is about all. Maybe Dana will tell me, next time I see
her, and I can get
all the credits right...lol.

Marcelo & Analia are an exciting young couple who have an impressive
list of accomplishments. Marcelo has been studying in the Carmona's Buenos
Aires tango school for more than a decade, and has assisted in group lessons
for almost as long. Marcelo recently ended a two-year world tour with the
hit Broadway show Forever Tango, and for the past year Marcelo & Analia
have been the directors, choreographers, and dancers in the successful
dinner-dance show at Caño 14 in Buenos Aires. Marcelo & Analia
have danced ballet, Argentine folk dance, and tango since they were six
years old. They have performed tango in Argentina, Peru, New York, Miami,
Seattle, Chicago, Canada, and Europe, and they have taught numerous tango
workshops in Argentina, the U.S., Canada, and Switzerland. They also appeared
as tango dancers in Alan Parker's movie Evita.
The weekend workshops are designed for a mix of beginning and intermediate
dancers. The workshops will cover basic skills and more advanced techniques
with the same refreshing innovations that we enjoyed with the Carmonas
last November. Because of the many interesting teaching techniques introduced,
and the well established value of repetition, we strongly encourage all
dancers to register for the entire weekend. Partners are not required.
Argentine tango is a social dance, and we always encourage all dancers
to practice with many different partners.

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:
Dear Derik,
Hey, what happened to Dana's beautiful legs? We told the guy to
make sure
that her legs are in the picture.

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:
Dear Joe:
The guy we grabbed to take our photo was a terrible photographer.
All we could see
was Ron's legs and his big shoe......lol. I though it would be better
to show the
group in closeup so we try to see more faces. Sorry about the shadows.
Some of us
were in bright sunlight and washed out and others like you were
behind shadows. It
was really tricky to get the photo to work at all. Next time we
are going to have to
get a girl passerby to take our photo. Maybe she will be kinder
to us...lol. See
you tomorrow at 9pm, Sunday evening at Cafe Express Post Oak for
Tango in the mall
next door. (A shameless advertisement...lol)) As Judith from Italy
said in her
recent Email to us from Dallas......Tango until you drop...lol.

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:
I see that the Tango chat is very alive, I am sorry not to have
joined and participated much so far. My travelling lately has taken
much of my time, I have moved to Sydney Australia, just got
officially married in Franc, I am coming back from our honeymoon
in
Thailand.
I remember a girl from Brisbane being on the chat room earlier,
are you dancing tango over there ? I am afraid I have been quite
bad
at attending Tango dancing evenings and have not danced for months.
Miss it but you know what it is ! They probably have Tango groups
here in Sydney, do you know ?
Hope you are doing all very well In Houston , I miss you all,
See you soon somewhere around the world
You are all welcome in Sydney anytime
cheers
vanessa
Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:
Dear Vanessa:
Great to hear from you. I saw Nadege yesterday in downtown Houston
and she says
hello. Also Sarah is now coming to Tango.
We all received your Email about all your wonderful travels. Sounds
like fun.
We will have to all come see you in Sydney soon. I will try to find
some information
about Tango down there for you. I guess that you will have to put
your bikini in the
closet now that winter is aprroaching..lol. We are just beginning
summer here in Houston.
At least you can Tango year around...
This past weekend we danced Tango 5 hours on Friday, 6 hours on Saturday,
6 hours on
Sunday and Sunday evening another 3 hours at Cafe Express. We are
all addicted...lol.
The workshop with Marcelo and Analia was fantastic. They taught
us how to listen to
the music and not to worry about how many steps we could learn.
Sunday evening we
also helped arrange for them to take some extra time from their
schedule to make a
quick trip to Austin to teach this Wednesday. Jill, the tango instructor
and Glenn
the webmaster for the Austin Tango Connection came down to visit
us on Sunday, and we
all had a lot of fun. Jill and I danced in the hallway after class...lol.
Tonight we are having our regular practice the downtown YMCA Health
Club as usual
from 7:30-10:00pm and then we are all migrating directly over to
the ANGELICA
Movie Theater and Cafe to dance more Tango at the Cafe in honor
of Marcelo and Analia
from 10:15pm on... as a "going away" party for them. Should be fun...
Never dull in
Houston.
Please say hello to John for me and give us a report on life in Australia.
We will
all be right here on this web page wherever we travel in the world,
keeping in touch.
Have a wonderful day. Looking forward to hearing more soon.

PS - Jasmine is going to Buenos Aires for 2 and 1/2 months to study
Tango at the
Carmona school full time, and Lisa and Raphael just got back from
a 10 day trip there.
They had a great time. Raphael said that she even went to the Tango
Congress while
she was there.
