Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:

My name is Anna Critchfield. I am in love with Argentine tango. I

live in Washington D.C. I will have to travel to Houston on business July 29 through August 2. Please let me know the tango events that will happen in Houston during this period. Also where can I see regularly scheduled events? I suspect I will have to travel to Houston several times after this visit.

Thanks

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:

Dear Anna:

Welcome to the World Tango chatroom. We are looking forward to your

upcoming visitto Houston. We love tango down here too and we love everyone in Washington D.C. We are looking forward to seeing you soon and hope that you visit us often.

We have a big FREE tango gathering every Sunday evening at 9pm until late at the Pavillon Shopping Center in the mall right next to Cafe Express at Post Oak. The mall is located at Post Oak Boulevard between Westheimer and San Felipe and it is closer to San Felipe on the West side. The entrance to the shopping center is around in the back where the cafe is located and the cafe opens onto the mall area where there is plenty of room to dance and also many tables and chairs to sit and watch the dancers. There also is food and drink is available from the cafe. The whole scene is like a family Sunday in the park. We have about 100 people come to dance tango every Sunday and we have an E-Mail mailing list of about 900. If you like I will add your E-mail addressto the Houston Tango Association automated E-Mail system which is run by Lester A. Buck. (we are a non-profit group) He keeps us all up-to-date via the E-Mail list on late breaking tango news in the Houston area in case anything changes.

Also, we all gather for $5.00 tango lessons every Tuesday at the downtown Houston YMCA Health Club from 7:30pm to 8:30pm and a new series of seven lessons for $35.00 begins this Tuesday. After the lessons we have a tango practica in the same room from 8:30-10:00 so people can practice what they just learned and others can just practice.

At the moment the above are the only for sure tango events that I know about. There are also other possibilities on Wednesday at Cafe Brazil from 10:00pm until 2am (impromptu tango with live music mixed with dances from all over the world...Irish step dancing, belly dancing, greek dancing, you name it...lol....a lot of fun..), then there is something on Thursday at the River Oaks Community Center, and finally a practica on Saturday at Discovery Dance. I will ask about these events tonight at our big group dance, Sunday, to see what I can find out.

I will be here on this chatroom if you have any more questions. Come on down and have some fun. As Judith Prister from the Dallas Tango group says, "Tango until you drop" ...lol. Looking forward to dancing with you soon.

Dear Derik,

Thank you so much for your prompt response. Yes, please, I would like to be added to the Houston Tango Association automated E-Mail system. I give my work e-mail: acritchf@cscmail.csc.com. I think from your letter, I will be able to find the places. I will ask my Houston collegues to help. If you learn about additional events by Thursday, please let me know. I am happy to hear that Houston's tango life seems very active. Looking forward to participate. I don't have picture to display here, but a web site www.zebrasys.com/anna shows me dancing in one of Washington malls with my instructor.

Thanks again

Dear Anna:

I have sent Lester Buck your E-Mail address so that he can add you to our mailing list, so you should be getting something from the Houston Tango Association pretty soon. Your picture on your web page looks great. Wow! Who is the macho guy...lol? Looking forward to dancing tango with you when you arrive down here.

Derik

rri@neosoft.com

PS - Still did not get good answers about Thursday and Saturday. Will talk with some more people tomorrow at our practica. Wednesday night is still good at Cafe Brazil but of course it is just impromtu tango included within the dances from all over world. The good thing though is that the music is live. It is basically a jam session with musicians coming in from all over Houston who love just to play music and be with their friends. It is definitely a hot scene....artists from everywhere.

PPS - If you want to post your picture here, just enter the location of a known picture that you have on a website somewhere, like:

http://www.neosoft.com/~rri/tango/wtderikbeacha.jpg

then your picture will post right after your message. I tried to do that for you, but I could not figure out which directory contained your tango pictures.

Sun Aug 08 11:41:28 CDT 1999

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:

Dear All:

Well, I arrived yesterday afternoon in Reims, France at the Hotel Mecure, in downtown, which overlooks the canal (a beautiful house boat barge is in front of my window). The weather is great, I have my cell phone as backup 06-85-67-27-71 (in France), (011) -33- 6-85-67-27-71 outside of France from the US, my hotel and now a cell phone wireless Internet connection....life is good...lol.

Right now I am sitting at a sidewalk cafe across from the giant Cathedral at the center of the city where this coming Wednesday at exactly 12:24 pm in the afternoon French local time (11:24 GMT or UT) the last total eclipse of the mellinimum will completely block out the noon sun for exactly 2 minutes until 12:26 pm or 11:25 GMT or UT. As I sit here I can see the preparations being made for the spectacular ceremony which will begin with a full symphony orchestra playing an original piece of music written just for this event at 12:00 noon, and then after the eclipse a full concert.

I am with a group of media people and we are now scouting locations for the best filming and broadcasting. We will be reporting directly back to the United States via radio and television. The fun thing is that I am with people who have just driven in from London England (used the Hovercraft to get across the channel) with all the latest reports on the "crop circles" which are beginning to appear again in the English countryside. Although some people think that these formations are fakes, there are also many here who believe that they are for real.. The symbols now appearing in the new crop circles now have to do with the coming of the eclipse. One reporter is going back to England after the eclipse to see what happens there next. People are gathered here in Reims from all over the world so the town is quite festive. Today we are interviewing the scientists at the local planetarium. Tomorrow we will be setting up our Internet and broadcast connections. It is all very interesting.

I am with a group who will be broadcasting to a national radio show in the US, called the Art Bell "Dreamland" show, which is a national late night talk show about flying saucers etc. In Houston, you will be able to hear the reports from Reims on KTRH radio at 740am and the show begins at midnight on August 11th. Also, we will be posting photographs and other material to the Internet for the Art Bell website in the US which should be fun. In between all this we will be drinking french champagne (Reims is the center of the champagne country) and dancing tango of course....lol.

My first night here in Reims, last night, I immediately discovered a wonderful Romanian gypsy orchestra playing 'live" music in the town square in a sidewalk cafe restaurant called "La Copoule" which is in the Hotel du Nord. We danced all night out in the streets at the front of the restaurant in the open air plaza, and GUESS WHAT! This orchestra specializes in wild gypsy TANGOS ....lol. We all waltzed and tangoed all evening, French, Italians, Romanians, and us....incredible... the most beautiful heart stopping music you can imagine. Tonight and every night, we will dance again of course

Also, the leader of the group, who is an excellent gypsy violinist and has even played in the US with the symphony, whose named is XXXXXX told me that he has come to play in the US, and he knows Kelly Keating, a wonderful woman who I met in San Antonio at Fiesta. Her father is the governor of Oklahoma. XXXX even stayed at her Dad's ranch. Knowing Kelly, this does not really surprise me somehow...lol. Anyway, who could have guessed that there would be a Romanian Gypsy violinist and his orchestra playing beautiful tangos in Reims, France during the last total eclipse of the sun of the millennium. What a trip...lol.

More later....

Dear Kim:

Well, I am here and I have found a "live" tango orchestra here in Reims...lol. Are you ready? Will be here at the Mercure Cathedrale Hotel until August 12th, the day after the eclipse. I will send you an E-Mail when I can. I have been having some troubles with my Internet connections at the Hotels but I think that I might have a wireless data solution now with my GMS cell phone once I get it working properly. Anyway, you have my cell phone number and the hotel number as a backup just in case the Internet does not work right away. Will be here and I have already danced tango in Reims last night...lol.

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:

Dear Georges and Raphaele:

How was tango on the banks of the river Seine last night on Saturday. I wish that I could have been there, but would you believe that I have already dance tango here in Reims?....to "live music" and Romanian...lol. Camelia in Houston would have loved dancing tango to the music here I am sure, since all the musicians are from her country and their tango music is incredible.

If you can come visit us in Reims to tango we will all be here and we are going to dance tango every night at La Cupoule. I am staying at the Hotel Mecure Cathedrale 31 Blvd. Doumer, Reims, France, room 225 and I leave for Paris to dance more tango August 12th. Emmanuel and his girlfriend, Natalia (a beautiful Polish girl in Paris) will be joining us in Paris on the banks of the river Seine this Saturday and Sunday.

I will be checking this webpage, my E-Mail and my cell phone 06-85-67-27-71 if you are around. When I am back in Paris I will be at Hotel Duminy Vendome 3 Rue Du Mont Thabor, Paris, France 75001 011-33-42-60-32-80 when dialed from the US. Hopefully will see you soon.

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:

Dear All:

Sorry for mis-spelling the name of the restaurant. It is La Coupole. Also I forgot to put in the name of the violinist in the Romanian Gypsies orchestra. His name is Cornelius Negoescu, and his accordion player is Maxim Marcel. They played for us all night tonight and we danced tango with a lot of people in the restaurant and out in the street on the plaza. Maxim also gave me a tape of their music to take with me. One Frenchman and his wife at the restaurant told me that he thought that the French were the romantic ones, but he said that he thought that our tango was the most romantic evening that he had ever seen. We did have great time. Tonight we are also doing a trial broadcast back to the US at 3:00am. Also, we have been invited by 10 French astronomers to follow them around during the eclipse. Things are quite interesting here in Reims.

But then I did not dance tango. For me, tango and Paris combination would be dream come true and now you have it. Enjoy. I will have to be back in Houston for 3 days: Wednesday 18 through Saturday morning 21st. Hope, Cafe Brazil will have some tango on Wednesday.

Thanks again for your kind hospitality and for tango. Looking forward to see you and other newly acquired tango friends again and again.

Well Reims, France is filling up with the media and about 600,000 people today. Television crews are here and the cathedral is the centerpiece. Tomoorow there will be an opera and a symphony at the cathedral during the moment at 12:24 to 12:26 French time. Some of our crew is off with 10 French astronomers camping on a hill tonight and we will remain in downtown Reims at the Mecure Hotel to photograph the cathedrale etc. Tomorrow is the big day. Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:

Hey Derik,

Good to hear that you're having a good time over in France. And oh yes, I'm jealous. But jeez, cool it on the crop circle and Art Bell talk. Crop circlees ARE fake, and the original perpetrators (not the copycats) have fessed up and have had their laugh. They were two Englishmen who tried to see how large a hoax they could pull off. They showed how they did it and then showed how they were able to toy with the public once they got noticed. And Art Bell is a loon. It's a shame that he passes on pseudoscience to the general public as actual fact and likewise hearsay as evidence.

But on to tango:

I just got back from a trip up to Chicago and then Norwalk, Ohio. (Beautiful downtown Norwalk, as they say) I danced with some really wonderful tangueras at Cafe Bacetti's on Friday night. The women were extremely good-looking. And the guys were really friendly. I would get off of the floor with one lady and one of the guys would come up and say "Hey, you haven't danced with HER yet. Dance with her!" and I would be immediately on the dance floor with another woman. Now THAT'S friendly! Anyway, if by chance any of the Chicago group from Cafe Bacetti's wanders by this page, I thought I'd let them know that I really enjoyed my time up there. I also invite them to post their own messages here on the board. It would be great to include you in the conversation.

Hope to hear more news about your great tango experiences in Europe.

I am happy that you arrived back in Amsterdam safely. Enjoyed talking with you this morning from Paris on the telephone. Our 'live"broadcast to the US went well. We were on the air to millions of people there nationwide on the Art Bell Dreamland show. You can click on the item below to see our report on the web. I loaded all the images via GMS cell phone sitting in the lobby of the Hotel Mecure in Reims while having dinner...lol. Thank you for your patience while we were working on the story. Dear Ron:

Great to hear from you. Today I am in Paris....

Chicago sounds like fun. Please tell them all that they are welcome to post here anytime. I guess that I will have to go to Chicago next...lol.

Leave it to a physicist to straighten us all out about the crop circles...lol.. I am not to sure about the crop circles stuff myself, but I sure am had a great time here in France dancing tango with Kim...lol.

The reporter that made the broadcast for Art Bell is Linda Mouton Howe who has won several national television Emmy awards and has been a reporter for CNN etc. She thinks that there is something to the crops circles and is back in England right now as we speak investigating the whole thing. I am not sure what to think, but I do know that I had a great time doing the broadcast...lol. By the way, Kim and I did not see any flying saucers at all, but we did see some stars.. Kim wants to do a radio show on the history of tango and we are talking about working together....while dancing tango of course...lol.

Anyway, great to hear from you. Thank you for posting and helping to keep this webchatroom alive and interesting. Let us all know what is going on back in Houston when you get a chance.

Tonight here in Paris, I am going to dance tango outdoors on the left bank of the river Seine and Georges said that he might make it down here from Brussels this Friday to join in. I asked him where he was going to stay and he said that there was no problem with a place to stay because the tango goes on until sunrise...lol. He and Raphaele danced tango here last week, and he said that it was spectacular fun.

Tomorrow, Saturday, Emanuelle and his girlfriend, Natalia will also met us for tango. We are already forming a big tango group here in Paris...lol.

I will let you know if I see any flying saucers down here by the Louvre Museum. Have a great weekend and please say hello to everyone for me.

Derik,

I saw your posting just now. I wouldn't mind showing you the evidence on crop circles, but this is a tango board.

I see your pictures of you and Kim. As stated in my last posting, I'm jealous. Oy, is she ever beautiful. Give her my number! Tell her I'm rich! Tell her I'm sophisticated! In other words - lie, lie, lie, lie, lie! I'll owe you one. Maybe I can buy you a beer.

I'm going with Ev up to Austin for a milonga this Saturday. I'm not sure exactly who else is going. It is the 3rd anniversary of the Austin Tango Connection. I went last year to the 2nd anniversary and had a blast. There were people from all over Texas - Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, even Brownsville. I hope it is just as good this time.

You've got to tell me all about your trip when you get back. When do you get back, anyway?

I am sorry to hear that your favorite Milonga is closed, but when I am dancing with you I am happy anywhere so it is no problem...lol. We have our Sony walkman and can also just dance in the streets with earphones, like we did in Reims for the eclipse...lol. I am really looking forward to seeing you in Amsterdam soon. Wish that you could be here in Paris.

I went to dance tango last night on the River Seine and it was wonderful. You would have loved it. There were about 200 people sitting in a beautiful open air sculpture garden right next to the water, watching 50 people dance tango by the water's edge. It is all outdoors and the dancers are dancing everything ....blue jeans and shorts...some are in slacks. It is a very "left bank" scene...lots of artists etc. I am definitely going back again tonight if the rain stops here. The dancers are fairly good, but also there are many who are average, so it is all very relaxed and fun. The people are from all over the world. I will give you a longer report after tonight...lol. Emanuel and his girlfriend Natalia are coming tonight, so it should be fun. Georges from Brusselles called me yesterday and could not make it, but he may show up this weekend still. We shall see.

I am glad that you liked the audio cassette tape that I gave you. The music is neuvo tango from Austin, Texas where Ron and Ev (Evan is a male tanguero from Houston and New Jersey) are going to dance this weekend. The name of the tango orchestra is "Tosca" and, would you believe that Ron and Ev are probably going to be able to dance tango this weekend in Austin with this orchestra playing "live" music for them and all the women.....lucky people....lol.

Tosca is an orchestra of all Texas women from the University of Texas at Austin. One man, Glover Gill, is the leader of the orchestra and he is the accordion. Glover writes all the tangos as original music and the girls help him arrange it. They are all like us....addicted to tango...lol. and they are beautiful people with great souls. There is a picture of them in the World Tango archives.

Tosca will be playing this September for "Labor Day Holidays" in the US at Lake Tahoe in California, about 4 hours drive from San Francisco for all the San Francisco tango dancers. The event is being organized by Alberto Paz and Valerie, the people who write the newsletter that I showed you in Reims, France at the restaurant. If I was in the US, I would definitely go to that tango weekend event for sure. I think it is the first of September.

Looking forward to seeing you soon. Wish that you were here in Paris. Will try to bring some tangueros with me to Amsterdam...lol. After seeing your picture here on this website dancing tango during the eclipse, suddenly all the men want to come with me to Amsterdam...lol. Georges has already told me that he would like to drive down from Brusselles, and I think that Ron is probably ready to fly over from Houston as well....lol. See you soon.

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:

Derik,

Hola, wanderer. We just got back from the 3rd anniversary milonga up in Austin. I went with Ev, Julia, and Liz. David Locke was already up there taking the workshop with Nito and Elba, and Tim and Jasmine showed up as well. They had a much larger showing from the Dallas crowd. One guy from Dallas was just eating up the floor. I forgot to get his name. Anyway, we had a great time dancing. It was unfortunate that it only lasted 3 hours. Afterwards, we checked out 6th street for a while. I started telling Liz all about your European exploits and she was surprised to find out that you had a chat board. Apparently, she has been e-mailing you and you have been replying via the chat board. She thought she had lost touch with you. Ev and Julia danced a tango on 4th street as a live band broke into a rendition of YMCA (unfortunately -- not quite tango music).

Anyway, Nito and Elba did two demonstration dances. In the second, Nito was blindfolded. But it didn't matter too much to him. My God, can they ever dance! Unfortunately, Tosca was not playing. I guess that's all the same, though, since people don't often dance to them. Nonetheless, it would be good to hear them again.

Well, I'm sure you're having fun. Let us know how the rest of your trip goes. Hurry back, because we are having a milonga of our own here in Houston this Saturday. Should be fun!

--Ron

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:

Dear Ron:

Life is good here. Sounds like you guys had a fantastic time in Austin. Wish that I could have been there too, but I must admit that I do kind of like it here in the South of France...lol.

Thanks for the great report on Austin. I would have loved to join in with Ev and Julia dancing tango on 6th street in downtown Austin. Sounds great. I know what you mean about people in Austin not dancing to Tosca too much. Since it is a city of musicians they seem to sit around and listen to the music rather than dance tango. When I was visiting them on a Monday night, I had to grab a waitress at the bar to dance...lol. She was cool and knew how to tango. Later however some of the Austin tango people did finally show up and we all danced. It is amazing to me that more people in Houston and now San Francisco seem to dance to Tosca than people in their home town. Hopefully this will change as more people in Austin get into dancing. I gave Kim a copy of their tape and she loves it.

Well, I have to do some work now. I have to turn over in the the sun so I get a better tan...lol. Life is good and tango is even better..

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:

Dear Liz:

How are you? I am sorry for the mix up but my E-Mail box at Neosoft is all messed up because I cannot dial long distance into it in order to get my E-Mail. I am going to have to use a special Internet program to access all my mail there and I have not had time to do it yet. The best place to reach me for the moment is at:

rawsonweb@compuserve.com

I was hoping that you were reading the webchat and could reply there. I should have sent you another E-Mail with the new address but I was not sure if you would get it. I remember you saying that you thought that you would not be able to come to France until after Reims so I assumed that you were still in Alaska camping.

I did tango during the eclipse and we all had a wonderful time. Also I made it to Paris and tangoed there as well. I am having a wonderful time over here. If you come over, let me know your schedule. I am going to be here in Monaco for a week and then I am going to Amsterdam to dance with Kim. Georges also said that he might come visit us in Amsterdam as well, especially after he saw Kim's picture..lol. Anyway, we will all be dancing tango wherever we can. Did you tango in Alaska?

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:

Dear All:

Derik here still in the South of France at the pool and the beach. Had dinner last night with someof the natives here and got a chance to speak a lot of French. The girl that sat next to me at the table was very interesting. We had a long talk in French about her trip to the US to visit Disneyland and she even showed me her collection of Mickey Mouse souvenirs, key chains etc. with her name, Marie, engraved on them.

Over here in Europe,Walt Disney is like the ultimate American thing. Europeans love all the films etc....lol. Marie can not speak any English at all, but she reallylikes the US. On her next trip she said that she wants to visit Texas and of course I invited her. I also told her all about our tango group in Houston, so maybe we will see her someday soon. She has a great job here in Monaco. She is the nannyfor Princess Caroline and of course in true French style, she looks more like a fashion model than a nanny...lol.

Later, when our group was walking around a small village here down the coast, called Menton, we had some extra fun because we think that we ran into Al Pacino, or someone who sure looked like him. We all posed for a group photograph right next to him as he sat with a girlfriend at an outdoor sidewalk cafe and I think we got him included in the group shot...lol.

We all had a great time clowning around and joking about all the characters that show up here in Monaco. The natives here see everything and everybody from the movie stars to the Arab sheiks. For them it is normal life. The only thing that they do not have here is the real Disneyland. They say that Euro Disney is just not the same. It is is really amusing to see that all the women here really have a big thing for Walt and Mickey...lol.

Tonight we are all going to have a big Texas barbeque at a condominium here owned by a Spanish girl, who of course, has a complete collection of Walt Disney items that she wants to show everyone. One of the men in the group is also a lot of fun. He turned down a date with Sharon Stone. Never dull here in Monaco..

Still out here in the sun enjoying life. Well, I guess I will have to turn over again. Gosh, this is so much work...lol.

Dear Houston WORLD TANGO:

Derik,

Stay away from the mouse!! He's eeeeevvvviiillllll!!!!!

We will be holding a milonga this Saturday from 8:30 to midnight at this restaurant downtown called Valentino's. (3704 Fannin, near W. Alabama, for those that are interested) This is a great idea, because we get to break out of the weekly routine and celebrate tango. This is my only piece of news that I think could possibly make you jealous for those of us in Houston. Truth be told, your day sounds like fun, and I wouldn't mind giving it a shot myself.

You'll be amazed, though. We have some new tangueras who are really very good. And the french dancers are becoming very good, too. I really enjoyed dancing with them last Tuesday at the Y.

See you later,

--Ron

Dear Kim:

I just received your August 18th E-Mail this evening, asking me when I am planing to come up to Amsterdam. I in the hotel here in Monaco through this Sunday, so I think that it will be sometime next week if that is OK with you.. My schedule is probably a lot more flexible than yours since you are working, so please let me know what works best for you. After this Sunday my schedule is open and I am free and on my own to do whatever I want. Are we still going the take tango lessons together on Friday? Life is good here in Monaco but I was listening to tango music on my walkman today at the pool and I was thinking about you. I am looking forward to seeing you again soon.
