Dear Tango world Wide:
Dear All:
Tonight there is a wonderful milonga at Cafe Matisse, Tuesday at the Belmar and Thursday at the beautiful turn of the century buiding in the Cotton Exchange Bar. This will be a great week for tango in Houston. Hopefully I will see you there.
Also, ny tango friend who dance at Bisto Latin in Paris, Franc say that the cool weather has arrived, so they are all dancing tango almost every night now as well. I may be in Paris shortly myself, with a stop over first in Geneva, and then on to the Far East for awhile, and hopefully Buenos Aires after that. Whew...could be a lot of traveling soon, but fortunately there is Argentine tango dancing in every city in the world.
As you can see this is an updated chatroom which I designed. It will offer more services over time. Check out the archives for posts from the previous months and years to get an idea of tango dancing around the world from Paris to Singapore from real people who are there dancing now, complete with pictures and short videos. They are all on-line here twenty four hours a day seven days a week. Have a great day.

Tango is still going strong here in Houston. Tonight Monday, we are all going to the Continental Club at Main Street and West Alabama, about 3 miles south of downtown to dance for one hour from 8pm to 9pm. Glover Gill of the now famous tango orchestra, TOSCA, just back from a concert tour in Argentina will be playing solo piano tangos just for us. He plays tangos there every Monday. Last week I was there and danced with Santa Claus! Actually Santa Claus was Trish, the BINGO girl, at the club dressed up in a Santa outfit complete with red skirt and hat. She is tall and beautiful, very nice and a great sport. We had a wonderful time. She hosts the bingo game which is part of the El Orbits band perfromance. The band begins playing at 9pm after our tango dance. Never dull in tango...lol. see you there.

Tomorrow Sunday January 11th is our big Russian New Year's Celebration here in Houston, Texas at the largest night club in Houston, City Streets... 6 miles from downtown on the West side of town at Loop 610 and Richmond. It costs only $8.00 USD at the door and there will be thousands of Russians out of the 40,000 Russians in Houston because of the oil business. Oskana who is on the poster below will be dancing all of the traditional Russian dances in full costume and there will be a full sized Russian Gypsy tango orchestra playing live music and EVERYONE will be dancing on the huge dance floor inside the club. All of our Argentine Tango group will be there and the orchestra will play tango music for us as well, plus there will be tango performances and other folk dancing...also belly dancing..Irish clog dancing...you name it. This annual event has been going on now for over twenty years. It is going to be a blast. Home cooked Russian food will be available for a few dollars. Looking forward to seeing you there.
PS- You absolutely have to get there early to get a table. It will be standing room only with thousands of people if you are late. It starts very early at 5pm on purpose, so families can participate in the festivities. All of the floor shows are over by about 8pm, so get there early!!! Dancing is great until about 10pm and then everyone goes home....except the Russians...lol. See you there..

I survived Russian New Year OK. We were all worn out from dancing from 5:00pm until 1:00am, so it worked out great. It was fantastic. We even had a real Hungarian violinist who is a member of the Houston Symphony play all the genuine Hungarian Rhapsodies for us. He was just wild...completely out of the box. I have never heard violin like that before, even in Europe...lol. His energy was incredible. The Russians were all fantastic dancers of course. We all danced until we could not stand up anymore. I slept about 10 hours last night, but now I am recovered. What a blast.

Next big tango event in Houston is at the Cotton Exchange Bar in dowtown Houston at the corner of Travis and Franklin. Full Argentine Tango Orchestra playing two sets at 9pm and 10:30pm. Glover Gill is on two tracks of the new CD and this will be a CD release party. It will be a blast, and the place is historic and beautiful, where the founders of Houston all kept their business offices in the old days.

Derik here in Houston, Texas....
We have a great time dancing tangos to the tango CD's in the jukebox on the wonderful sound system at Byzantio this last Tuesday from 9pm until midnight. There were 20 people total. When I left there were still tangueros dancing...lol. The great thing about the jukebox is that we can play 4 tangos for a dollar anytime we choose, which means that we can dance at Byzantio anytime. How about tango at a lunch break or in the late afternoon with your girlfriend, just you and her? Cool idea or what? CD's on the juke box are COLOR TANGO ORCHESTRA from Buenos Aires and another wonderful mix of old and new tangos. How romatic can you get? See you there soon, maybe next Tuesday.

Dear Tango world Wide:
hey all,
I have been dancing in ny for the past few weeks and it is great here. I began dancing in the summer of '03 and am involved in a performance coming up this may in cleveland, however I must mention that I would never have known about the tango were it not for Derik. He is the man. Derik understands the nature of the tango moreso than anyone else I have encountered during my time involved with this amazing dance.
I plan on documenting the performance and hope to get it pluggedin to the net through Mr. Rawson's website.
I owe it all to Derik.
Thanks for everything, you are a great human.

Wow! Thanks. I am really glad that you enjoy dancing tango as much as I do. It is a blast, that is for sure...lol. I fiured that you might like the dance ever since your visit to Bistro Latin in Paris, France, and of course we all had a fantastic time this last August in New Orleans dancing at the TANGOFEST with Alberto and Valerie Paz, Eric Lanoix and Susana from Houston and yours truly. Johnna was also a great sport. She danced tango really well and was a lot of fun. I loved the night when we all danced tango in the bars on Bourbon Street and also did a little Salza out on the street in front of the Salza Cafe. Wow, what an evening...lol.
Please keep me posted on all the latest tango dancing in New York City. Afterwards, I danced tango at Dance Sport Studios on Cloumbus Circle (59th and 7th Ave) on Sunday and had a great time.
Susana says hello from Houston, and I talk with Annie by E-mail and cell phone in Boston, so you may hear from her soon about dancing tango in Boston. All is well here in Houston. Have a great day in New York.

Dear Adam:
It is Tuesday morning here in Houston and I am enjoying a cup of cafe au lait and working on web sites.
Congratulations on buying the new suit...cool. Your tango event last weekend sounds like it was wonderful. I have a funny story about wearing a nice suit at tango. One time I had on a double brested pen stripe suit while I was dancing, and this computer programer came up to me and said, "Derik, I thought we got rid of the idea of having to wear suits at Berkeley...." I said, "..but I am wearing this suit for pleasure." He thought a minute and said, "Right, good point...lol". After that, he bought a suit too.
Anyway, tonight we are all going to Byzantio Cafe at 9pm to dance tango. Susana says hello. She had a big birthday bash this last Saturday which went on until 4am, but today is her actual birthday, so you know that we are all going to have some big fun tonight. she is also Irish-Italian-Argentine, and tomorrow is St. Patricks's Day, so I imagine that the party will jist continue on...lol. Also, all of the Russians are coming to dance, so it should be wild. They were all at Saturday's party as well. Whew..it seems that the fun just never stops.. as you know from this last summer when we were all in New Orleans dancing tango in the streets in the French Quarter.
Well, I hope to see you soon again. Have a great time up there in Cleveland. Looking forward to seeing you in New York this summer.

The milonga last night in one of Houston's two different Chinatown's, at Diho Square Shopping Center was great. I had a wonderful time. I danced my tail off...lol. Below is a picture of the sign for the milonga that Veronica, Katherine and Lee put up so we could all find the dance space at J and L Dance Studio. I danced with Lee, who owns the dance studio and teaches dance. Needless to day, she was a beautiful dancer...fantastic. Also Katherina, who introduced me to Lee, was wonderful to dance with as well. Katherina is a really elegant tango dancer. She knows how to use the dance space and takes really wonderful long steps and she does them all beautifully. All the men and women there were really some of the best tango dancers in Houston, in my opinion. The women could follow any man without any problems at all, no matter how fast the dance went. This is not always the case here in Houston. Too many women here get lost if the man moves to quickly...lol. Martin Palaez is responsible for this I think, because he teaches tango so people can relax have some fun, instead of being worried all the time. More than half the crowd was from Argentina, so that is probably what made the difference, and the Chinese dancers certainly know how to dance really well for sure. All and all the milonga was terrific. Cannot wait to go dance there again.

Dear All;
Well we have an interesting development here in Houston this weekend. Finally our local tango dancers are going to learn "liquid" tango, a marketing term, from dancers who have come down here from New York. It is the mixing of close embrace milongero or "milongita" style (little milonga) and open style salon tango. This of course has been going on for years everywhere else in the world except Houston, and a lot of the US West Coast. I am glad to see Houston dancers finally come out of their provencial attitudes and learn what's up...lol. The idea originally came from BA and Paris of course..

Dear All:
I had a wonderful time dancing last night at Rice University. Leonor and Mercy invited a wonderful couple to Houston, from New York, Caleb and Ting, to show us "Liquid Tango", which is basically mixing close embrace milongero style with open salon style so the dance is not limited to only a single style. Caleb and Ting were are wonderful dancers...really great. Hopefully, now Houston dancers will begin to dance in this more fluid style like the rest of the tango communities around the world, except for parts of the West Coast. For me persoanlly it was really nice to see a demonstation by competent people who know what they are doing.
I danced with a lot of wonderful women last night, and had a great time, Esra, Joy, Valorie and others. Robert, who has been to Argentina many times, was particulary hot that night dancing with Joy. Ron of course is always great. Here is Ron in the picture below dancing with Ting. My cell phone camera does not do well with finding a sharp foucs in low light levels, especially with movement, but you can at least see them...lol. Robert is dancing with Esra in the background. I took other pictures, but this is the only one that came out in focus at all.

Wow! Had a great time last night here in Houston, Texas at the Museum of Fine Arts special premier showing of the new feature film documentary "TARNATION" which is being released world-wide this week. And here at the downtown Angelika Theater. Great movie.. It has a wonderful music soundtrack put together by LUCAS FILMS (The "Starwars" people in San Francisco) THX surround sound and it was produced by a local Houstonian on a PC computer using a simple personal software editing program called I-Movie. The film won best documentary at the Los Angeles film festival, the Sundance Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival, so needless to say, it is really wildÂ….lol.
Vivian Kalnikov, who was acting in the film invited me to the premier She arrived in town this past Sunday with the producer/ director. Jonathan and his film people. Vivian is a professional film actress in New York, so she is in films all the time. She is a wonderful blue eyed-blonde from Bulgaria, who speaks the language of course, and she is kind enough to dance Argentine tango with me here in Houston and in New York where she lives.
Vivian called me on my cell phone to dance tango, so we got together at Cafe Cosmos Sunday night. She also introduced me to another good friend of hers, Vanda, a beautiful blonde actress who lives here in Houston, and also lived in Europe for many years and speaks Dutch. Vanda is in the film too. Both Vivian and Vanda are great. Vanda is a wonderful person and of she wants to dance tango too, which is fine with me. We are going to be doing that here in Houston in the next few days. Vivian is in another film called "Prime" which is being shot in New York, so she is going back there today. I will have to wait to dance with her when I get back up to Manhattan. We are all planning to dance tango next in New York at "La Nacionale" very soon. Meanwhile Jonathan, the friend of both girls, now a famous director/producer, gets to travel the world promoting his new film and be paid to have fun...lol. He and his film people are off this week to Australia, Japan, Bangkok, SingaporeÂ….etc. etc.
We all had a wonderful time at the Museum of Fine Arts at the screening and then went to a party afterwards at the Warwick Hotel next door. The weather was great so we all sat outside under the stars on the terrace, talking about the film business etc. Lots of funÂ… Wow! Never dull in HoustonÂ…lol. Derik

The Tango World Wide Calendar is running publicly now. Only members can add new cities to the list and post messages about events "in their own words", but anyone who wants to join Tango World Wide is welcome. Tango organizations and professionals can also join at a higher fee. The minimum fee for dancers only, is about $2.95 per month on your credit card. Payment is through Pay Pal. Your member ID is issued for immediate use. Member services will grow over time. The idea is to let anyone announce an event themselves, even dancers, anywhere in the world and keep the calendar up to date. The calendar can be accessed by cell phone as well, so it is very convenient to use if you are lost in New York City, Paris, France, or Buneos Aires in a taxi and you want to know all the latest details from everyone on a milonga, or a tango class....lol. We shall see how the concept works. I am also working on a Tango World Wide Magazine, which is also "self published" by tango dancers and professionals who become members. The magazine is being developed now. More later...

Well, the Tango World Wide Calendar is working at:
http://www.tangoworldwide.com
which is also this web site address URL now, as of last Friday. I switched in on finally...lol.
Now people are slowly begiining to enter their own tango events from cities all over the world. You can read and search the calendar for FREE. You can also post your own event to see how publishing on the calendar works. The evnet will publish and last for a few hours or more. Only members publsihed tango are permanent, but it only costs about 3 dollars a month to become a member, so that is not too big a deal. Also the first 30 days of membership are FREE and you can cancel anytime, so you can try out the full system to see how it works for you, before you decide. We all spend about 3 dollars for a cup of coffee at Starbuck's, so I figure it is a reasonable price for a good service. Members also help pay the bills for the web site so it keeps going. Anyway, we shall see how the calendar works. Hope you all like it.
Tonight, I am going to the Continental Club. I have posted all the details for the event tonight to the calendar under Houston, Texas USA if you scroll down to Mondays. I even put up s picture of Glover Gill plaing the piano. Should be a fun evening. He is a great muscian and lots of fun. Maybe see you there.

Had a great time dancing tango last night at the Continental Club. Betty Benton a great dancer from Philadelphia was there with my good friend Woody. They met in Miami and later in Buenos Aires dancing tango. Betty came to visit for the Holidays. Woody has been dancing for only a year, but he is really doing great, and Betty really makes him look his best. I think that he is progressing so fast because he takes the interest to travel to different places to meet and dance with tangueras from all over the world. He is a great guy and Betty is a wonderful woman. My favorite story that she told us last night, was dancing tango out on the beach in Nice, France all evening and of course missing the last train home...lol. Sounds like me for sure... I am going to Crossroads Coffee again tonight. Should be great fun. Also the huge (70,000 Russian in Houston now because of the oil business) annual Russian Julian Calendar New Year Party will be held late this year on February 6th at the Meridian Entertainment Center in downtown Houston. It is a newly redone place and it did not have its liquor license in time for the actual date, which was last Sunday, BUT that is not going to stop us from celebrating.
Also, another a big event at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Houston for $20.00 a ticket, this coming January 30th at 7pm. A real Hungarian gypsy concert with Ferenc Illenyi violinist of the Houston Symphony and his Gypsy Band. Not to be missed if you want to hear the authentic music of Hungary. Knowing our tango group, we will probably dance a few tangos in the aisles, and I bet that there are some great Hungarian tangos...lol, but it is a concert.
For the big Russian New Year party there will definitely be a lot of tangos and a tango performance as well, all danced with the Russina Gypsy Tango Orchestra playing live music of course.
These are two really fantastic events coming up soon in Houston. See you there and at Crossroads tonight.

We danced out tails off last night at the Melody Club. Four hours of tango not stop solid from 10pm to 2am. Big crowd, wonderful time. A beautiful place, as you can see from the cell phone photograph that I took last night, before the floor filled up with dancers. Huge dance floor just for tango and yet another dance floor in another room for Salsa. There must have been one hundred or more tango dancers there, and plus all the salsa people as well. Great evening. Thank you Juan Carlos for being an expert DJ and Alicia for organizing the dance, and thank you Patricia for doing the traditional raffle just like in BA. Tonight, I am going to the wonderful milonga at Dance Art in Houston's Chinatown, just west of the city. Info is on the calendar. The place all brand new, built by the Chinese who moved here to Houston from Hong Kong and Europe. The dance space is fantastic. All the food and wine for $10 and everyone brings something to add to the table. A wonderful evening for sure. DJ is Argentine, probably Adrian and his wife Veronica from BA. Katerine and her husband Jim from London have made all the arrangements. Jim and Katerine are both great tango dancers. They learned at the same time together. This evening will be a great time for sure. Big crowd the last time. Same tonight.

Big Russian New Year Celebration tonight Sunday on Feb 6th...a little late, but going to be great fun. We hare having it in downtown Houston at a new venue called the Meridian, an old warehouse re-done as a dance venue, just finished. It did not get its liquor license in time for the actual date which was a few weeks ago, so today is the day. There will be thousands of people, a full Russian Gypsy Orchestra that plays Argentine and Russian tangos of course, a Hungarian violinist from the Houston symphony, and Flamico guitar by a student of Sergovia's. Our entire tango group in Houston will be on hand. Susana from Buenos Aires and Ilyia from Baku are going to perform an Argentine tango dance and Oksana from the Russian Bear Restaurant is going to perform authentic Russian dances in full costume, she made herself. Oksana dances tango as well of course...lol. We are also going to have a rock n roll band led by Steve Adams which recreates the great authentic band sounds of the 60's. He does the Beatles, the Who, the Doors, all with full vocals, all band members singing. It ia going to be quite an evening, celebrating all the cultures of the world. Big scene. Hope I survive....lol. Life is good. I will take some pictures with my cell phone of course.
Derik
PS- That is Oksana on the poster below. She got a professional job dancing a Russian dance last week from one of the consulate's here in Houston from being on this web site, so she is happy....lol. Never dull.

Tonight going to Crossroads Coffee Cafe for tango 9pm to 12 midnight. Last night was Susana's birthday, so we were all at the Wine Tasting Room at the Gallerie Uptown Shopping Center celebrating with her. Ira organized the entire thing and did a wonderful job. The night before Martin Vittone, who is from Buenos Aires, and is now back in town, organized a wonderful new tango evening which will now be a regular tango event every Tuesday. We all danced tango at the BAQUERA ART GALLER in a beautiful house in the 500 block of Chaucer Street Street, one block from RICE UNIVERSITY. The owner of the gallery, who is also from Argentina, was kind enough to invite us all to dance among the paintings in all the rooms of the house downstairs. He loves tango, and he has invited us ro dance there every Tuesday night from now on from 8pm until 12 am. Wow! What a fantastic evening. The place has and great sound sytme and beautiful wood floors in evey room. It is spacious, and has a wonderful intimate atmosphere. Thank you Martin and Senor Baquera.
Also, this Sunday, we will all be back at COSMOS CAFE for FREE to dance tango to the "live" music of the Russian Gypsy Tango Orchestra, from 7pm to 11pm. Come early to get a table. The place has great food and it will be packed. This is truly a magical evening of tango, and last time it was an all tango evening...superb dancers and music. There are also milongas this Saturday at Dance Art and Dance For Life studios, and they are both great as well...more details soon. Basically, one can dance tango somewhere every night for the next several days, except Friday, and there probably is something I missed..lol. Details on the Tango World Wide Calendar complete with pictures and maps, for your cell phone, PDA or laptop. Have a great weekend everybody.

Fantastic evening at Cosmos Cafe. Place was packed with tango dancers and we danced to tangos all night long. Live music from the Russian Gypsy Tango Orchestra. Just like the rive gauche (left bank) in Paris. Many Argenines, Europeans, Asians, Eastern Europeans, Russians, all dancing tango. Also, great Gypsy swing (a la Dejango Reinhardt from Le Jazz Hot Club in Paris in the 1920's) and French and Argentine waltzes. What an evening. Life is good.
PS- Tonight, more live tango music for one hour 8-9pm from Glover Gill at the Continental Club. Tomorrow, dancing tangos in the Baquero Art Gallery near Rice University. Never dull. Life is good.

Fantastic week of tango here in Houston. Last Saturday went to Galveston, Texas to see the large 4 masted Spanish sailing ship which was in port. Boarded the ship and talked with all the Spanish sailors, who wanted to come dance sith us of course...lol. After that went to the big milonga at NASA manned space craft area on Clear Lake and stayed up until 5am dancing tango at Eric's house. Monday night did the Continental Club and Tuesday night did the Baquero Art Gallery. David Baquero, who was a concert violinists with the New York Philharmonic, played us a Carlos Gardel tango on his guitar. Turns out that David, as a young violin student also played violin in Astor Piazzolla's orchestra, so he told us all about his experiences dealing with Astor....lol. We danced tango's on the front lawn in the grass, and also inside on the beautiful floors and generally had a wonderful time. David also is opening a new art exhibit tonight, Thursday, for a wonderful artist who came down from Chicago. She loved our dancing tango in the gallery amongst her paintings. Tonight, after the opening of her show, we are all going over to Crossroads Coffee, which is just down the street to dance more tango with Ilya and the gang, at 9pm of course. This Saturday is a big dance at the Melody Club and this Sunday is Cosmos Cafe with live music again. Never dull. Spring is definitley here. Beautiful weather and fun people.

Tonight, Sunday from 7pm-12am, is Cosmos Cafe again, with a "live" Russian Gypsy Tango Orchestra. It is definitely a "rive gauche" (left bank) tango experience. David Baquero will be there along with all of the musicians, dancers and artists in Houston who really love tango...of course. Come early to get a table. Food is cheap and great. Really good wines...goat cheese salad etc. Also, this last Thursday night Crossroads Cafe was packed again, and guess what, Chiaki showed up from Paris, France. She and I dance together a lot at Bistro Latin and all the venues there. Chaiki was here in Houston on business for a few days, and found the venue via the Internet of course. She is a beautiful, intelligent girl and a great personality. Chaiki is originally from Kyoto, Japan, but I think she grew up in Paris and is now living there. She dances tango every moment she gets. Chiaki (prounced Jackie, but with a "ch" sound) says that the cool milonga now in Paris is on Monday nights at RER Metro stop "University". She says that is her favorite place to dance. Hopefully I will get a chance to be back in Paris again soon to try it out, and see her agian.
Welcome to the US.....lol.
Chaiki arrived at Crossroads Cafe in a taxi cab coming from the Intercontinental Hotel, normally a 15 minute drive. The black taxi driver was fighting with his girlfriend who rides along with him in the front seat, while his clients pay for the privilege of watching him yell at her....lol. Chiaki said that the guy was lost for an hour and she never thought that he would every find the place. Anyway, she was really happy to finally find us and dance some tangos. We danced all night long of course. Everyone loved her, especially the men...lol.
Also, Woody's daughter, beautiful recently married, Anatastia, who was a dance student at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and is now attending the University in Colorado, came in from Denver to visit for the day. She, like Chiaki is a great tango dancer. The men were standing in line for her as well. What an evening!!! Two new fabulous females dropping in from out of town. Fabulous evening. Spring is here. Life is good.
See you tonight at Cosmos Cafe.

Waht a wonderful night again this last Tuesday at David Baquero's Art Gallery, of course. Thank you Martin Vittone, who discovered this new tango venue for us, and of course to David Baquero for another fabulous evening of art and tango. There must have been 50 or 60 people there, all dancing tango in every room...wow! What a scene. And the very best part was the "live" music by Ferenc Illenyi, who is a violinist with the Houston Symphony, accompanied by Gregg Harbar of the Russian Gypsy Orchestra. Ferenc is a famous violinist from Hungary, who plays all of the Hungarian gypsy music and Greg is from Belarus and he has his own Russian Gypsy Tango Orchestra. What wonderful musicians. Ferenc's tango violin was just unbelievable, and he could play anything. Beautiful music.... David Baquero, who himself, played for the New York Philharmonic and was in Astor Piazzolla's orchestra, graceously invited them both to play tangos for us at his gallery. We were all so happy. We all danced to our favorite tangos. What a romantic and charming evening. Ilyia and his girlfriend Ina were also there visiting from Crossroads Coffee Cafe, where we dance on Thursdays and they loved it. We are all going to dance tango tonight at Crossroads, so we will see you there. Life is good.

Dear All:
This Saturday we are all dancing for FREE again on the patio at CENTRAL MARKET to the wonderful live Argentine tango music of Edwardo Griggasy's full tango orchestra called LATIN CARNIVAL. The last time these wonderful people played tangos for us was a year ago. They were all dressed up in white tie and tails at a wonderful formal milonga event, which they organized all by themselves at the COTTON EXCHANGE BAR, a beautiful turn of the century historic building in downtown Houston. You can see previous posts about the event and below is a picture of this venue. The LATIN CARNIVAL tango event was so succesful that bar owner allowed tangohouston.org sponsored tango teachers to take over the venue. In the process he took away the orchestra's advertising, which is the only reason it was playing at the venue. Of course, without great live music, the venue failed within a few months. Prior to this situation, the same orchestra created a very long, 2 year, successful weekly milonga at the Azucar Club, where the club owner was smart enough to promote the orchestra first. Wisely, he stayed away from dealing with tango organizations which promote teachers instead of tango. Hopefully this great orchestra, LATIN CARNIVAL, will be suppored again, by just us local tango dancers, this time, without the local tango organization and tango teachers getting involved with the owners of the venue to promote teachers. Anyway, we are all going to have a great time dancing tango this Saturday from 1-5pm at CENTRAL MARKET. Once you hear this orchestra, you will wish that they were back at the COTTON EXCHANGE BAR playing again in white tie. These guys are truly great musicians, who have actually lived in South America, so they really know Argentine tango. Come join in the fun. See you there.

Wonderful tango weekend. Danced all afternoon on the patio in sunny Spring weather at Central Market to beautiful live tango music from Edward Grigassy's the LATIN CARNIVAL tango orchestra, two violins, two guitars and of course a bass. Went through a bottle of Norton Malbec in the process, with Joe and Sarap, so I went home to take a nap completely missed Susana's big milonga at the BELMAR CLUB that night. Woke up at 1am. Susana forgave me. She said that over 60 people were at the BELMAR CLUB and that the evening was a big success, so she was very happy. I wish that I had been there. I should have skipped the wine, but she understood and said that it was really really good wine, which it was of course...lol. Yesterday night on Monday, we went to Glover Gill's brand new solo piano gig at his new venue at BIG TOP CLUB right next door to the CONTINENTAL CLUB. The atmosphere there is great, dark red, just like the Balajo Club in Paris. There are even comfortable sofa's and tables around the dance floor for the dancers. The best thing about the new venue is that Glover nows plays piano tangos for us for an exta half hour, from 8pm to 9:30pm, so we can enjoy his music even more every week. Tonight, Tuesday, we are all going to Baquero Art Gallery from 9pm until 1am, and that is always a great event, dancing tangos in every room, and enjoying perhaps live music again. See you tonight.

Jackie, the owner and genral manager of Salento, has invited us to come dance tango weekly at Salento on Wednesdays from 8:30pm to 10:00pm. She came to dance tango with us at Baquero Art Gallery a few weeks ago and loved it. David Baquero has his morning coffee at Salento's, which is just down the street from his gallery. The dance space is very nice, because the tables will be moved to create a large dance floor. Salento's is a wonderful Argentine Wine Bar and Coffee House. One of the owners is from Argentina of course...lol. The hours may be extended in the future, especially for tango nights, but the cafe usually closes about 10pm. See you there. Huge turn out and a lot of new people to tango, from Italy, Argentina, France etc. etc. Our host Jackie stayed open late to accomodate everyone. She and her husband danced tango as well. We all danced and partied until 12 midnight. Wonderful slection of Argentine Malbec wines.....lol. Also had a great time the next day at Crossroads Coffee Cafe. Another huge turn out. All the Russians were there. Our host, Ilya, played some wonderful old and new Russian tangos which most of us have never heard before. He is a great dancer and DJ and his girlfriend Ina is also a beauty and a fabulous dancer as well. Great time. Tonight, Saturday we are all going to Dancing For Life Studio for a milonga..wonderful little dance space. Robert Schoenberg will host and DJ. We can bring him our CD's to play as well. Last night, on a week night, on Wednesday at Salento's was again filled with tango dancers until 1am. Guess we all prefer week nights on Wednesdays and Thursdays over Sundays. I danced all night with Thuy. The "live" Russian Gypsy Tango Orchestra was wonderful. Cosmos will happen again this next Sunday again as well. Houston, Texas...
Dear All:
Crossroads closed at 10pm last night on tango night Thursday, which is there normal closing time, because tango dancers are not showing up in sufficient numbers until after 10pm and then they are trying to dance until really late after hours. (ie: 4am one night) The message to tango dancers is to come on time during the posted hours of 8:30pm to 12 midnight, and arrive before 10pm in large numbers or else forget it. Same is true for Salento's. In both places we have to arrive on time and finish dancing by midnight on week days because the landlords require this is the lease agreement, and these restaurants can loose their lease. These cafes are already staying open extra hours beyond 10pm just for us, so we need to be considerate.
Wow! This last Wednesday at Salento's was a blast again. It was packed and we all did show up just before 10pm and left at midnight, so that one worked great. Now we have to do the same thing for Crossroads. It is a wonderful place to dance, so we need to keep it going.
PS- I talked with Crossroads and they are going to start serving really great Argentine wines, so that will make things better for us all in the future. I am also talking with them about maybe improving the floor somehow so it is less rough. Of course in Buenos Aires people dance in the streets, so I am not sure why the floor is a big issue. Wine I can understand...lol

The contents of visual information above is fairly difficult to convey in text messages anyway. Why not be brave and post a question or two, instead of letting me do all the work? ...although I am doing it all the time anyway. It will not hurt you to help....lol. Danced with new tango visitors from Sweden, Finland, Russia, China, Egypt, Italy, plus people from just about every country in South America, Happy Holidays..

Live music with plenty of Argentine Tango along with Russian gypsy dancing. There are 70,000 Russians in Houston and this is their new year's party. As we all know, the Russians are great tango dancers and love tango. Musicians coming into town from all over the world to play for this gig. This party is always a blast. Tickets are around 10 dollars. Details on the Tango World Wide Calendar.
See you tonight at COSMOS and HELIOS.
PS- The announcement from last year's New Year's party is below. Girl on the right is Oskana from Ukrane. She will do a Russian-Argentine tango performance of course...lol. She is kind enough to dane tangos with me when she comes to visit our tango venues. She is the star of the floor show at the Russian Bear Restaurant here in Houston. Wonderful person. Incredible professional dancer. Life is good.

Wow! Never dull on a public discussion..lol. I have no idea who these people are who posted recently. This kind of thing is exactly the reason why it is much better to join a membership, so everyone knows the identity of the people posting. I have been busy dancing tango, so have not checked in for awhile.

Tonight WED at 9pm - 12am there is the big regular FREE weekly milonga at SALENTO CAFE at Rice Boulevard and Morningside in the Rice University Village Shopping Center. All the staff dances tango and the place has World class wines (owner lived in Barcelona..knows wines), including Malbec of course. Should be fun. The scene looks a lot like the United Nations. It is full of people who aleady know how to dance Argentine Tango and have found each other in this big city. Houston is the fourth largest city in the USA. The people at SALENTO learned how to dance in BsAs or their home countries. Houston is now a very international city, just like London, Paris, and New York, because of the many highly educated and world traveler expatriots working here in the oil business and at the medical center (60,000 people work in the medical center alone). At SALENTO's you will experience true world tango for sure. See you there. Cell phone picture below.

Big new Argentine Tango event here in Houston this next Tuesday on July 11th. Edward Grigassy's tango orchestra is playing "live" tango for dancing (milonga)at Melao's Restaurant and Bar. Starts at 8:30 pm and the entrance is ten dollars. Nice dance floor. The venue is located at the intersection of Wilcrest and Harwin (just outside the West Beltway). The address is 6104 Wilcrest Dr., Houston, TX 77072. Phone numbers at the venue are 281-564-0466 and 281-704-3911. I helped Edward start his orchestra at Azucar Restaurant at our weekly milonga there before I went to live in Paris and now over the years it has become really fantastic. Edward is a great guy. He and his orchestra play regularly at the Wortham Center downtown for the Da Camera Society and many other City of Houston cultural events, so the music is high quality for sure. The evening next Tuesday will be all tango music for dancing all the time....some very cool stuff. Life is good. See you there. Derik

Wow! What a great time this last Saturday at the performance of Tango Fire. It was Forever Tango all over again. Full orchestra& fantastic dancers. Beautiful clothes. These are the people who dance in the milongas after 3 am experimenting with new ideas after the tourists, who crowd up the dance floor go home. To me this is what Argentine Tango is all about...exuberance!!! Live life to its fullest!!!! What a trip. We all brought our blankets, wonderful Dona Paulo Malbec red wines, les baguettes, pate, camenbert and smoked Norwegian salmon... and we had a picnic on the grass outside under the stars. Laura, Irman, Ashley, Tatiana and all us guys who love to dance with them. The place was packed, but we still had a great time. Afterwards, we went to Cafe Tango of course, and danced the night away. Life is good. Derik

Fantastic time this last Saturday at Cafe Tango. I met Ana Baron from Buenos Aries, Argentina via Paris-Washington and we had a lot of fun dancing tangos and talking about Bistro Latin in Paris. She dances tango of course and now lives in Washington D.C. and is the U.S. Correspondent for CLARIN. She works out of the National Press Buidling in D.C. Great fun dancing with her. Also, we all adjourned until 4am to Susana's apartment to watch Tango Fatal and a great tango DVD that one of the guys just brought back from his trip last week. Wow! the dancing was really really intense, the way it should be. Incredible stuff. Passion with a capital "P". Very very hot! The DVD made the CITA video which we watched afterwards look like a high shool prom dance...lol. Chico from Paris and his partner were incredible of course. Anyway, life is good, as always. See you all at SALENTO Wednesday this week at 9pm. Derik PS- Susana dancing below..
